We have just returned from 4 fantastic, action-packed days at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials 2016, where Champagne Pol Roger had the honour of being the Official Champagne.

This year, for the first time, we erected the Pol Roger Lodge in the stunning parkland of Burghley House from the 1-4th September. The lodge was an après-ski themed bar space, replete with vintage skis, toboggan, bespoke bar and our unique Pol Roger Land Rover Defender ‘Polly’, who took centre stage. We were delighted to work with Fairfax saddles who kindly provided us with two of their beautiful saddles, each mounted on a wooden horse, which quickly became the most coveted ‘seat’ in the lodge!

The lodge was a hive of activity throughout, providing an oasis from action in the dressage and show jumping arena as well as the adrenaline-filled cross country course and fantastic shopping opportunities. It offered the perfect environment in which to relax and enjoy a glass of Pol Roger Brut Reserve, Brut Vintage 2006 or Rose 2008, and guests did not have to miss a moment of the action as live coverage of the day’s eventing was televised from the tent.

One highlight of the weekend was the virtual course walk, hosted by our Ambassadors Harry Meade, Laura Collett and Lucinda Green and world-renowned course designer and international eventer Ian Stark, compered by the inimitable Spencer Sturmey on Friday evening. Guests were guided through 11 selected jumps, via drone footage, and Spencer grilled the panel on the potential pitfalls of each fence and how they would approach them. It provided a fascinating insight into the famously challenging course, through the eyes of some of the world’s leading riders.

In spite of the wet weather on Saturday, spirits were not dampened, and guests rallied to the Lodge following the Cross Country for the inaugural Champagne Pol Roger party, and were rewarded with champagne, music and a chance to dry out by the fire.

Sunday offered an exhilarating finale, televised in the lodge, with Christopher Burton claiming the Land Rover Burghley title despite lowering four fences in the final show jumping phase, having secured such a significant lead in the dressage and Cross Country.

We look forward to returning in the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in 2017.
