Champagne Pol Roger is the proud sponsor of three prestigious Varsity Blind Wine-Tasting Matches. The original and longest running of these is the Oxford and Cambridge University match, which this year saw the 62nd clash. Due to the success and merit of this match, in more recent years Pol Roger has extended this sponsorship with the launch of two further matches; the Edinburgh vs St Andrews match and the Bath vs Bristol Match, thus consolidating the geographical spread of Varsity Blind Wine-Tasting matches across the country.
The Edindrews match was held at the New Club in Edinburgh; 7 students from both Edinburgh and St Andrews University arrived full of nervous excitement in anticipation of the match. Will Lyons of Wall Street Journal and an Edinburgh Alumni and Damien Joubert-Winn of Woodwinters wines attended as the esteemed judges and we were joined by Hubert de Billy of the Pol Roger family to oversee proceedings. Edinburgh came out on top, with a very impressive performance from the Edinburgh Captain and top taster Maciej Pajak.
The third Bath and Bristol match took place at Bordeaux Quay in Bristol. James Clark of Pol Roger had been to visit both universities to tutor blind wine-tasting sessions with the teams and was hugely impressed by the progress made by both teams from the preceding year. It was clear that both teams had risen to the challenge and prepared for the match with unprecedented assiduousness. It was a closely fought match, however Bristol emerged victorious.
Pol Roger is delighted to see the practice of Blind Wine-Tasting celebrated and acknowledged as a worthy academic practice by a number of Britain’s top universities. We look forward to next year’s matches with a wave of new students, new wines and renewed rivalries!
