Champagne Pol Roger Appoints Chef Ambassador Michael Wignall

Champagne Pol Roger is delighted to announce a new partnership with two Michelin-starred chef Michael Wignall, who will become an ambassador for the champagne house from the 1st November 2020.

Michael is chef patron of The Angel Inn at Hetton, an historical inn dating back to the 15th century and widely regarded as the UK’s original gastropub. The inn was awarded a Michelin star in October 2019, less than a year after Michael and his team arrived at The Angel.

The food-friendly style of Champagne Pol Roger, made using 100% stainless steel fermentation, lends itself perfectly to Michael’s innovative cuisine. Michael is renowned for creating unique dishes full of flavour, underpinned by a contemporary, less formal approach to fine cuisine. Pol Roger Brut Reserve will become the Inn’s house pour, with a number of other cuvées joining the wine list. Throughout the year Michael will create seasonal dishes to pair specifically with a particular cuvée.

Michael and his wife Johanna had a vision for The Angel, to keep everything that the much-loved inn was famous for; fantastic food, a warm welcome, a deep connection with the dramatic Yorkshire landscape and, first and foremost, to make it outstanding.

Champagne Pol Roger shares a number of these core values; a celebration of tradition and a commitment to achieving the exceptional.  Founded in 1849, the house has been producing exceptional champagne ever since and remains, to this day, small and under family ownership.

Maison Pol Roger owns 92 hectares of vineyards in prime sites across the Vallée de la Marne, Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs. The cellars run for 7km and the deepest, known as the ‘cave de prise de mousse’, is 34m below street level where the temperature is 9°C or less, thus prolonging fermentation and contributing to the unmistakeable quality and style of the wines and their famously fine bubbles.

The Angel Inn at Hetton has origins which date back to the 15th century, located in one of the most exquisite corners of the North Yorkshire Dales. Famous for its food as well as its warm, welcoming atmosphere, it has maintained a strong following among locals as well as with customers from all over the world.

James Simpson MW, Managing Director of Pol Roger Portfolio, said of the partnership ‘We are thrilled to be working with such an acclaimed chef and feel very excited about Michael’s deft understanding of flavour and how he will use this to pair the different champagnes with inventive and previously undiscovered pairings.”

Michael Wignall said
