Champagne Pol Roger has signed a partnership agreement with Barbarian FC, to become the Official Champagne of the prestigious rugby football club for the 2018/19 season. The house has been a longstanding supporter of sporting competition and is already the official Champagne of Bath Rugby.
Barbarian FC is steeped in history stretching back to its foundation in 1890. The club was brought to life by the vision and enthusiasm of one man, William Percy Carpmael. Inspired by his playing experiences with both Blackheath and Cambridge University, his dream was to spread good fellowship amongst all rugby football players. The dream became a reality on December 27th, 1890 at Friary Field, Hartlepool. There, all things great about the game – flair, courage, spirit and passion – were encapsulated in one great team, a team they called the Barbarians.
This rich sense of tradition and passion is also at the heart of Maison Pol Roger, founded in 1849; the house has been producing exceptional champagne ever since and remains, to this day, small and under family ownership. Champagne Pol Roger and Barbarian FC share of number of core values, not least their reputation for achieving the exceptional. Barbarian FC count in their alumni a galaxy of legendary players of all nationalities, who are welcomed into the Barbarian family by invitation only.
Maison Pol Roger owns 92 hectares of vineyards in prime sites across the Vallée de la Marne, Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs. The cellars run for 7km and the deepest, known as the ‘cave de prise de mousse’, is at 34m below street level where the temperature is 9°C or less, thus prolonging fermentation and contributing to the unmistakeable quality and style of the wines and their famously fine bubbles.
Paul Graham, Director of Business Development at Pol Roger Portfolio, says of the partnership “We are delighted to be partnering with such an exciting ‘sporting institution’ such as the Baa baa’s men’s and women’s teams. Champagne Pol Roger has a rich tradition of enjoying and supporting domestic and international rugby. We look forward to an exciting partnership featuring alongside some of the worlds most talented rugby players.”
Chris Maidment, Honorary Secretary of Barbarian FC commented: “The Barbarians and Pol Roger both have a rich heritage stretching back into the 19th century and a shared commitment to excellence and enjoyment. These qualities are as important today as when we were both founded and we’re delighted to form this partnership. Pol Roger’s partnership with the Barbarians underlines the affection and respect in which this unique club is held in the sporting world.”
Champagne Pol Roger will mark the beginning of their partnership at Barbarian FC’s first game of the season, The Killik Cup, against Argentina, held at the iconic home of rugby, Twickenham Stadium, on 1st December.
