The release of Champagne Pol Roger’s Blanc de Blancs 2009 marks 60 years since the house first created the iconic cuvée. When Maurice Pol-Roger first heard his grandson, Christian de Billy, propose a Blanc de Blancs for the 1959 vintage, he is reputed to have retorted “If you are producing wine of the quality of Montrachet, why put a bubble in it?”. 60 years later, the 2009 vintage, produced in limited quantities from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs, attests to Christian’s vision.

2009 can be categorised as a warm vintage in Champagne. After some challenges early on in the growing season, a warm summer from mid-July to September ensured that alcohol levels were over 9.5 degrees across the region. The grapes at harvest were both ripe and very clean which is always a good indication of the quality of the vintage. 2009 has a lower acidity than 2008, but it also has excellent concentration and fruit definition meaning that it may drink earlier than 2008, but it is worth noting that ripeness in Champagne is as important as acidity in determining how the wine ages.
The fruit comes exclusively from the Grand Cru villages in the Cote des Blancs of Oiry, Cramant, Avize, Oger and Chouilly. This wine has been aged for 7 years in Pol Roger’s cold, deep cellars before being disgorged with 7g/l dosage and aged for a further 6 months in bottle, prior to being released onto the market.
The wine is pale yellow in colour with bright aromas of citrus and yellow fruit, the palate is round and supple with a creamy mouthfeel, balanced acidity and a fresh clean finish. Ready to drink now and over the next 8 years, from 2017-2025.
