As we enter our second season of sponsorship of Hugo Palmer Racing, we are delighted to share with you a series of three previews from Hugo, of the exciting racing season to come, which starts in earnest on Saturday 24th March at Doncaster for the Lincoln meeting.
Hugo Palmer’s Preview:
The list below includes some short previews of some of the horses who I hope will be leading lights for us this season, starting here with the best of the older horses.
ARCHITECTURE (IRE) 5 b m Zoffany (IRE) – Brigayev (ITY)
Runner-up in the English and Irish Oaks a couple of years ago, she unfortunately suffered an injury last spring and therefore didn’t make her reappearance until late September. She ran well in a Group 3 at Newbury but then found the ground too quick next time at Newmarket in the Listed Pride Stakes. She was over the top by the time we ran her in the Group 3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury having had three quick races. We have given her a break since and she looks well. She has only won one race and that was in a maiden so we are keen to win a stakes race with her. The Listed Daisy Warwick Stakes at Goodwood (5th May) could be a suitable starting point but she doesn’t want the ground too fast. The Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood (2nd August) could be under consideration later on.
GIFTED MASTER (IRE) 5 b g Kodiac (GB) – Shobobb (GB)
He has been a star for us winning three times last season, including a couple of Listed races at Newmarket and Lingfield. Our first juvenile winner during the 2015 season, he keeps producing and has developed again during the winter. Six furlongs is his trip and I would like to win a Group 2 with him this year. Races such as the Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket (19th April) and Group 2 Duke of York Stakes (16th May) could be on his agenda and we ran him in the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury (21st July) last season and that could be a target once again. We put blinkers on him last season and they really sharpened him up.
HYPERFOCUS (IRE) 4 b g Intense Focus (USA) – Jouel (FR)
A useful juvenile a couple of years ago, he benefited from being gelded last summer winning twice at Haydock in September. Disappointing on his final start at Doncaster, he made a noise during the race so we have operated on his wind since. He likes some ease in the ground and his first target is the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot (23rdJune) followed by the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood (4th August).
UNFORGETABLE FILLY (GB) 4 b f Sepoy (AUS) – Beautiful Filly (GB)
A big strong filly, she won a Listed race at Musselburgh and then followed up in the Group 2 German 1000 Guineas in June. We were then aiming her at the Falmouth Stakes but she was very sick beforehand and didn’t return until September. Her homework suggested she was over it but I wasn’t keen to run her in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster because the ground was against her. We then took her to Keeneland for a Grade 1 but it was bottomless. She is a fast ground filly who looks well following her winter break. She could return in the Group 3 Chartwell Stakes at Lingfield (12th May) with the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot (20th June) being her main target. Seven furlongs and a mile suit her.
