Saturday brought the winners total level with last year as Dukhan won a competitive handicap at Newbury. The gelding was beautifully kidded through the race by Jason Watson and delivered late to win by ½ length. This was the first win of the season for the son of Teofilo who had begun to look hard to win with.
Also at Newbury Almufti ran a good race in third in the Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes, running on well having looked sure to be swallowed up 2 furlongs out.
The week ended with another winner as James Doyle produced a dramatic late surge to get up close home on Never Back Down at Lingfield. Held up towards the rear, the gelding was last entering the home straight. Doyle switched him round the whole field and he swept past all his rivals to win by a neck on the line.
This victory continued Hugo’s remarkable sequence of training more winners each year which has continued since 2012 which was his second year as a trainer.
Totals this year: 78 winners and 91 placed. Given that there are few runners now for the yard as the season winds down, these reports will not appear weekly – but look out for an end of term report coming soon.
