No apologies for starting this week’s report with Gifted Master. The stable stalwart, running in only his second handicap, rallied once headed to win the ultra competitive Stewards Cup at Goodwood under top weight. As always he blasted from the stalls and showed a tremendous attitude under pressure from 5lb claimer Jason Watson. This was the jockey’s last win before his claim goes down to 3lbs and those extra 2lbs may well have proved crucial as he only won by a short head. The first prize of £155,000 won on Saturday took the horse’s career earnings to nearly three quarters of a million pounds – not bad for a horse who falls just short at group level. He has now won eleven of his twenty six races (and both handicaps he has contested). What a grand servant to the stable.
Tuesday saw Hot Team at Newburywin as the odds suggested he would. He ran on strongly under James Doyle to win by 1 ½ lengths at 2/5 Fav.
Wednesday saw Deira Surprise build on the promise of his debut fourth, finishing a close second at Kempton. Favourite, as he was first time out, he disputed the lead until taking it up entering the final furlong and was only run down in the last hundred yards.
Relatively few runners this week left the seasonal totals on: 43 winners and 61 placed horses.
